How To Treat A Panic Attack

Over the last two years, I have unknowingly  being suffering from panic attacks. My symptoms weren’t as serious when it first started, but as the months went by, the attacks got progressively worse. It’s a very strange circumstance when you have an ‘attack’ of a symptom and you’re not really sure what it is. Perhaps stupidly, I ignore such incident because  for some reason I am of the opinion if the symptom disappears on its own, there  isn’t really  a problem!

If I were to have visited the doctor,  I couldn’t have gone in and directly asked how to treat a panic attack because I didn’t know that’s what I was having. My symptoms were basically a big shortness of breath, all of the time. I would be gasping for air and for no apparent reason it would seem. I had every test done you could imagine and everything come back clear. A nurse asked me if I was under any kind of pressure and I said no, because I believed I wasn’t.

I was walking back from the doctors when I had 5 minutes of the most desperate, intense breathing I have ever experienced – even after a hard run. I didn’t think I was ever going to catch my breath, I thought I was going to die and it’s a life changing experience.

How to treat a panic attack

Treating a panic attack it not about waiting for it to happen and then treating it – you need to be more proactive than that. If you wait for it to come on, you’ve already lost – its damage limitation.
Relaxation

For me, treating the panic attack was about relaxing. Taking time out of my life to relax, because there was nothing of the sort up until this happened. Relaxing isn’t just about breathing techniques and yoga (although they can work), real relaxation is personal to you. For me, it’s hitting the gym, treating myself to a massage and sauna and playing snooker. These are all things that relax me, they might not relax you, but they relax me. It’s important you spend time thinking about what relaxes you and you only. It might be a long drive, golf or cooking – find out what it is and do it whenever you can. It’s worked for me and for me, that’s exactly how to treat a panic attack.
